Behind the Lens
There is a saying by C.S. Lewis, "You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream". I believe in that 100% and proof is in the pudding. I'm likely older than you (doesn't bother me one bit), I've done the career "thing" and I am officially, although not a fan of the term, an "empty nester". I prefer to introduce myself as Jules, self-reinventor. I haven't been doing photography for a decade. I started in 2022, when my brother became terminally ill. He had 5 precious weeks following his diagnosis and the gift he gave me, unbeknownst at the time, was the beginning of my photography journey. When I visited with him, having brought my camera with me, we walked the neighbourhood where he lived and shot image after image, reminiscing about the days when he was the school editor and chief photographer and how much he had loved photography. It gave him a sense of peace. He would talk to me about composition and how you can see life differently through the camera lens. Before he passed, my brother encouraged me to keep going with the camera. I think he saw something in me that I hadn't yet realised. The camera would be my therapy during the grieving process and I think he knew deep down, I would come to love it just as he had.
Well he was right. So, I jumped into the deep end, watched endless YouTube videos about cameras and lenses and took a photography course in London. The rest is history. I absolutely adore my Canon R5 and seeing life through the lens during my travels and everyday living. Every image is cherished, a moment becoming a memory with one snap of the shutter button. Welcome to ByJulesSmith, I hope you enjoy the gallery. Please get in touch with any questions or comments. All the best, Jules
